Classic Rich Fruit Cake
This is proper hand made fruit cake. Deliciously dark and moist cake packed with juicy sultanas, raisins, currants, sumptuous cherries, tangy orange and lemon peel and a pinch of spice. A traditional English recipe with over 45% fruit and no artificial colours or flavours. Baked in the tin and vacuum-packed to seal in the flavour and freshness. Specially produced by Buckingham Cakes (our sister company) in very resilient packaging for mailing overseas.

Did you know? Originally called ‘plum cake’ the origins of fruit cake in England date back to the 16th century. Richly flavoured, it is made with a mix of dried vine fruits (sultanas, currants and raisins), candied or glace fruits (typically cherries, orange and lemon peel), flour, eggs, butter and brown sugar. Fruit cake was traditionally baked at the end of the harvest. It was said to bring good luck if the cake wasn’t eaten until the beginning of the following harvest. It was banned for a while in the 1800’s because it was considered ‘sinful’ being too rich and delicious. Fruit cake is loved by British royalty. When Queen Victoria married in 1840 her wedding cake was a huge fruit cake weighing over 135 kilograms. More recently, Prince Charles and Lady Diana had fruit cake at their wedding in 1981, as did their son Prince William when he married in 2011. In England, the cake remains very popular all year round to eat with ‘afternoon tea’ – a tradition still observed by many English families, at home or in teashops and restaurants.
